Hello! My name is Annie Emmert and I am a fifth-year student at the University of Cincinnati. I am a Medical Sciences major, and I am in the University Honors Program. After graduation, I plan to take a growth year before applying to Medical School to pursue a career as a physician.
In May of 2017, I graduated with honors from Saint Ursula Academy in Cincinnati, Ohio. In high school, I held a variety of leadership positions, such as National Honor Society President, Student Body Treasurer, and liaison to the ambassador program. In addition, I served as an after-school tutor at St. Francis De Sales Elementary School and I was a member of the French Honor Society.
During the Spring Semester of 2018, I was a volunteer at the Christ Hospital Health Network working in the Acute Care for the Elderly Unit. As an intern, I worked directly with patients and assisted in their holistic care. Whether it was listening to a patient's memory of their time working at the Cincinnati Observatory or engaging a patient in an interactive game of "Toss 'n Talk," my time as a volunteer was an overall rewarding experience. Because I was so impacted by this Honors Experience, I decided to become a volunteer at Cincinnati Children's Hospital on the Liver Transplant, Colorectal, and Rehabilitation Units for the fall 2018 semester. Volunteering at Children's Hospital inspired me to try my hand at another side of hospital work: research. I currently work in the Cornwall Lab, an orthopedic research laboratory studying the mechanisms of muscle contractures. I have since been a part of my lab's exciting discovery of a sex-specific manner by which contractures develop in neonatal mice! Aside from research, I am a ROAR Tour Guide for the University as well as a student ambassador and Treasurer for the Medical Sciences Ambassador Program. Additionally, I was previously involved in Greek Life as a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and I am currently a member of several honor societies, such as Omicron Delta Kappa. Furthermore, in the summer of 2020, I founded the service-based organization, College Companions, which works to form mentorship relationships between college students and older adults living in retirement communities and hospice centers. I served as the President of this organization for the 2020-2021 school year, and I currently serve as a student advisor for the program.
During my growth year, I hope to continue my research at Cincinnati Children's Hospital with the goal of expanding upon my current findings on the sexual dimorphisms in neonatal neuromuscular contractures. In addition, I hope to use my gap year explore more of my passions, such as working with children, older adults, and teaching!
