It is required for all University Honors students to enroll in the Gateway to University Honors (HNRS1010) course. Gateway to University Honors is a one-credit hour class that offers Honors students the opportunity to learn more about the responsibilities for representing the University Honors Program. The purpose behind this course is to acclimate students the benefits of being an Honors student and to teach students ways in which they can get the most out of their undergraduate experience. In my opinion, learning about our strengths using the CliftonStrengths for Students self-assessment was one of the most important lesson that I have learned in this course. Prior to completing this assessment, I always felt pressure to be perfect in all aspects of my life. However, my Gateway to Honors instructor taught our class that it is better for us to focus on our strengths rather than dwell on our weaknesses. Another important lesson that I have already taken away from this course was the lesson on reflection. Reflection is an art form that offers individuals a creative outlet for their thoughts. I hope to continue reflecting throughout my time as an Honors student. Moving forward, I plan to use what I have learned in this course to challenge myself to discover new interests and pursue my passions. The five Honors Experiences that are required of Honors student will allow me to develop myself as a scholar, a citizen, and a leader. The mission of the University Honors Program is to “develop students into global citizen scholars who lead innovative efforts toward solving the world’s complex problems.” Through the many lessons I learned in my Gateway to University Honors course, I am confident in my ability to graduate from the University of Cincinnati ready to solve the world’s complex problems!
